Video Game Industry: Realism versus Experience, Photorealism versus Fun

Video Game Industry: Realism versus Experience, Photorealism versus Fun Hello reader, thank you for your visit. I was playing with my new console (I am just an occasional player, not a hardcore one), but could not avoid thinking on how fun it was to play games in the old days, you know, the nineties.

I know, I know, technology is hundreds of times better now, amazing graphics, superb AI, celebrities playing characters and the like. But, man, how we all loved those little eight bit, flat looking games.

Let me refresh your memory with this compilation that I found, great memories indead:

Photorealism the next frontier?

Dont get me wrong, I enjoy great graphics as much as the next guy, but I believe that the gaming industry has lost its way and they are driving astray from the righteous path: FUN!!!

We already have photorealistic media, it is called movies, and it is been around for quite a bit now. This is the trend that concerns me about games: New games are increasingly photorealistic, but a lot less interactive. If they continue that way, they will end up very much like movies.

Watch this great collection of next generation upcoming games, yes, I know, great looking

Pop corn games? Whatever happened to experience?

Sit down with me, in front of my flat screen and watch some games or play some movies. Not so incredibly fun, is it? But imagine for a moment, putting some virtual reality suit and three-dimensional goggles, and then immersing yourself into a fully animated and interactive three dimensional experience where you are the main hero (or antihero) of your game. Now, that is fun, dont you think?

I believe that this industry should focus in the immersive experience: software and hardware, instead of focusing on the final graphics and cashing in whatever big celebritys name they hire to voice over a character. How about making games chilling funny or scary again?

This video shows exactly the way that Id absolutly dream of playing big games like God of War and the like

Thank you very much for reading these lines, I would love to know from you, so I would appreciate it if you leave a comment below.
